Are Schools Safe? What can we do to Keep our Children Safe in Schools?
We send our children off to school everyday, without a thought most times, whether or not they are going to a safe environment. We never think that our children may not return to us at the end of the day. The recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary has shaken an entire nation. Our perceptions have been challenged, our ideas about safe schools and education in general have been exposed. Are schools safe? How do we create a safe environment for our children to learn?
I can’t imagine what the parents who lost their children are going through right now. My deepest condolences and prayers are with you all. As a parent I honestly never considered that my children could be in danger at school. I never considered the possibility that a single disgusting act of violence could take my children from me.
Those are not the kind of thoughts we are supposed to have. This incident has definitely opened many eyes and has brought about the realization that bad things can happen to good people; innocent people.
What can we do to keep our schools safe? What are your thoughts or suggestions on the steps we need to take at the state, federal, and even city level to ensure our children make it home to us tonight? All thoughts are welcome.
